There aren’t many trainees who would turn down an international secondment. Spending a seat abroad can be an enriching experience, both in terms of work (overseas offices are often smaller, which leads to increased responsibility) and because they provide an opportunity to fully immerse yourself in another country’s culture. These Lex 100 winner firms are hard to beat when it comes to their international offering. Watson Farley & Williams tops this year’s chart, with its ‘guaranteed international secondment’ cited as a major enticement for joining the firm. What’s more, the six-seat training contract means that some trainees are lucky enough to undertake more than one. Another firm which guarantees an international secondment is White & Case, where one recruit’s best moment was ‘working on an investor state arbitration case whilst on secondment in Moscow’. Norton Rose Fulbright’s ‘international character and resulting opportunities for secondment’ and CMS’ ‘international focus and secondment opportunities’ drew in many wannabe lawyers. ‘Flying to Kuala Lumpur and actively participating in a 12-hour final negotiation whilst on secondment in Singapore’ stood out to a lucky Stephenson Harwood secondee, a ‘very exciting and useful secondment to Hong Kong’ was a RPC secondee’s favourite moment, whilst a Dechert junior particularly enjoyed their ‘secondment to France’. At HFW ‘every trainee has to go to one of the international offices, and there are some great locations!’. Cleary Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton’s ‘international element and opportunity to travel’ and Hogan Lovells’ ‘international reach’ also excited trainees.
