A new category for this year, we felt the need to include the approachability of supervisors in our survey because it is a factor which can have a sizeable impact on the training experience. A training contract is a time for learning, and this learning should be led by experienced fee earners. Supervisors who welcome questions and observations from trainees will ultimately reap the rewards as they ensure that the work produced by their protégés is informed and well executed. On a day-to-day level, dealing with an approachable partner or associate really can make or break a seat. Brabners partners demonstrated their friendliness as early as at the interview stage, which was enough to convince some trainees to join the firm. Senior members of the team at RPC are ‘kinder and more approachable’ whilst supervisors at Bristows help foster ‘much closer relationships with colleagues across the firm’. One trainee at Mills & Reeve raved that ‘it really is good to be able to approach fee earners with questions and to receive meaningful and constructive feedback from them too’. Moreover, Cleary Gottlieb’s ‘very approachable and impressive associates are also excellent teachers and mentors’. At Osborne Clarke, colleagues are approachable ‘all the way up to supervisors and partners’. ‘Everyone I have worked with’ at TLT is ‘very approachable and keen to help you develop’ and, at Taylor Wessing, people are ‘genuinely friendly and always happy to support your learning’. Fladgate partners operate a ‘genuine open-door policy’ and ‘the approachability of partners and senior team members is significantly better’ at Fieldfisher.
