Don't miss out! January 2016’s vacation scheme deadlines

Firm recruiters continually stress the importance of work experience and how essential it is that candidates present themselves as proactive, prepared and serious about a career in law.

Most jobs, internships and work placements will be relevant to life as a lawyer. Whether you have worked in a supermarket or a garage, or spent time in an office environment, you should be able to demonstrate that your experience has developed a range of skills and knowledge that will stand you in good stead as a trainee.

That said, some hands-on legal experience really is increasingly expected of strong candidates, and vacation schemes remain the gold standard for law firm work experience. The application window for a large number of this year’s schemes closes this month, and competition for places is increasingly fierce so jot down the key deadline dates and give yourself time to draft a strong application.

A wise recruitment head once told Lex that vacation schemes are a ‘great opportunity for you to find out more about your shortlisted firms, their cultures and values, and importantly whether they are the right fit for you.’

We also recently heard from a former vac schemer and now trainee who saw the fortnight as a chance to shine: ‘Many firms treat vacation schemes as extended interviews to determine if candidates can complement their businesses. Although this may sound intimidating, to the contrary, a scheme is the perfect opportunity to showcase your abilities, personality and enthusiasm.'
