Firm snapshot: The Baker & McKenzie training contract

As a firm with considerable ‘global presence’, Baker & McKenzie offers its trainees the chance to work on ‘big international projects’. The firm is the largest in the world by number of offices, and this naturally leads to ‘great secondment opportunities’. The firm is duly a Lex 100 Winner in the international secondment category, and also scoops awards for diversity and social life.

Baker & McKenzie receives 2,800 applications per year, and is looking to recruit 30 trainees in 2017. The application process consists of online tests and a telephone interview, with successful candidates then invited to an assessment centre. GDL and LPC fees are covered by the firm.

Baker & McKenzie is a leader in the tax, employment, competition and corporate crime practice areas. Recent work has included advising Korea Electric Power Corporation on the development of the Barakh nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates, and acted for Townsend Group on the establishment of a pan-European real estate fund with Standard Life in a €350m deal.

As well as its three Lex 100 wins mentioned above, Baker & McKenzie also fared well in the remuneration, vacation scheme and friendliness categories, and was praised by respondents for its ‘comprehensive training programme’ and ‘collegiate atmosphere’.

If the firm were a fictional character it would be… James Bond – suave, sophisticated, and always emerges with a smile.
